Unlock Your Child’s Potential and Love of Reading – one step at a time!
Hello, my name is Ms. Anabel. I’m an English tutor with 17+ years of experience and a background in AMI Montessori education.
I teach children in the early elementary years (ages 5-10) to develop or improve their reading skills through interactive, personalised online lessons in Canadian English.
I’ve worked with many children and developed my own approach to early reading that blends phonics with Montessori-inspired techniques. By building strong foundations, I help kids unlock the ability to decode new words and continue growing as confident readers.
I've seen firsthand how children can grow when they are guided and nurtured in ways that align with their unique learning styles. Through personalised approaches that recognise each child's strengths and challenges, my program helps them build confidence and make consistent progress.
My Classes Are Perfect for Children Who Are:
Taking their first steps in English
In French Immersion or École francophone and aiming to become fully bilingual in English
Learning with ADHD, ADD, or other learning differences
Working at or below their current grade level
Looking to improve reading and writing skills, boost grades, and gain confidence
Fueling Your Child's Reading Journey with Word Rockets & More!
In my lessons, I focus on the foundations:
Phonics & Decoding
Grammar
Punctuation
Vocabulary, Reading Fluency, and Comprehension
I use a combination of activities, including Word Rockets and Commonly Used Words, to expand your child’s vocabulary and teach them the rules that make English make sense.
These activities help children understand language rules in a clear, concise, easy to understand way. Each rule provides your child with the tools to decode hundreds of new words. Many activities use pictures to strengthen learning. Combined, these rules open the door for decoding thousands of words.
Custom books
To make learning more effective, I’ve created custom books that reinforce what your child has recently learned, giving them an opportunity for deeper understanding.
Chapter books
When children are comfortable with reading, I introduce popular chapter books that help speed up their reading skills, give them the chance to put the rules they've learned into practice, and expose them to different writing styles while developing a deeper love of reading.
Reading alongside me allows for on-the-spot corrections and explanations of new words, ensuring they can incorporate these words into their vocabulary and pronounce them correctly.
Canadian vs. American spelling
Since children are taught in Canadian English, when they encounter American spelling in published chapter books, they are taught about the differences in spelling. Knowledge of spelling variations helps children become more skilled readers.
Dictation
Dictation is designed to improve spelling and expand vocabulary. Each week, children learn a set of new words, followed by a review and comprehension check the following week. Any challenging words are revisited to reinforce learning, helping your child stay motivated and proud of their progress. This approach also keeps their interest high while strengthening their sense of accomplishment.
Kid approved!
At the end of our lessons, I often hear “Thank you for teaching me!” accompanied by a grin from ear to ear!
My system is easy to follow and highly effective, focusing on letter-sound connections, decoding techniques, and building a love of reading.
With the goal of preserving your child’s love of learning, we work at a comfortable pace, ensuring the information is clear and fun for them.
What Your Child Will Learn
Core Reading Skills & Language Development
My program focuses on building key reading skills and language foundations that children need to succeed. Through phonics, vocabulary expansion, and comprehension practice, kids learn to decode words, understand what they read, and express themselves clearly. Each lesson is designed to match your child’s individual pace, helping them become more confident, fluent readers and stronger communicators.
Phonics & Decoding
Phonetic letter sounds
Sounding out phonetic words
The power of open and closed syllables
Digraphs and split digraphs

And more

Verbs, adverbs, adjectives
Nouns and pronouns

Other Languages
Many of these approaches also aid in learning other languages (including French and Portuguese).
One parent shared that their child’s full day French teacher commented she had never seen a student’s understanding improve so quickly in a short time and asked what they were doing differently. The only change? Their son had enrolled in my English program, where he was learning, understanding, and applying language rules and techniques that directly translate to other languages.
What Students Have Said:
“Can we stay longer?”
“You’re my favourite person in the whole galaxy.”
“Thanks for helping me with my tricky words. I’ve learned so much!”
“I really like reading chapter books and figuring out the hard words.”

Summer Program
Summer break is a time to relax and recharge, but it can also bring a hidden challenge: the “summer slide.” This learning loss happens when kids take a couple of months off. Without regular practice, important skills, especially in English, can fade.
The good news is that even small amounts of learning make a big difference. Whether it’s reading a fun book or brushing up on grammar and punctuation, staying engaged helps children keep their skills sharp and avoid that slow start when school begins again.
I offer flexible summer lessons to maintain progress, keep learning fresh, and make it fun.
Let’s make sure your child is ready to hit the ground running come September!
