Chapter Book Reading
Reading Chapter Books Together
✓ Pronouncing words correctly
✓ Understanding meaning
✓ Slowing down to fully understand the text
As your child’s skills grow, we transition from custom learning books designed to teach specific rules to age-appropriate chapter books. This helps them apply what they've learned, build confidence with longer stories, and improve reading stamina and focus.
During our lessons, your child will learn to pause at punctuation and pronounce words clearly and accurately. We pay close attention to punctuation, as it can significantly change the meaning of a sentence. I provide gentle, immediate corrections for misread words, remind them of the applicable rules, and offer definitions when needed to help with comprehension and vocabulary growth.
The chapter books your child reads with me are written in American English. As your child reads, I will help them learn how to identify key differences between Canadian and American spelling.
If children are left to read on their own before they've fully developed their language skills, they may end up learning to read words incorrectly. For example, children often confuse "Roz" with "Rose," and this can happen with other words too. Having me to guide them will keep them from teaching themselves incorrect reading habits, and having to struggle through relearning the correct lessons later.
Chapter Book Reading with a Comprehension Component
Once your child has developed a solid reading speed, we can introduce a comprehension component, where they will be challenged to recall key details from the story. This helps them strengthen their understanding and retention of the material.
This practice will not only enhance your child’s current reading abilities but also lay the foundation for stronger academic skills in the future. Developing comprehension early on helps children retain information, improve critical thinking, and build the ability to analyse texts more deeply. These skills play a vital role as children encounter more advanced topics and texts in later years, laying the foundation for academic success and a lifelong love of learning.
Building strong comprehension skills early on sets the stage for success in all subjects. As your child learns to understand and recall details from books, they will develop the ability to think critically - a skill that will support them in problem-solving and help them handle more advanced learning concepts in the future.
